Skibbereen Theatre Society

skib_theatre_soc.jpgSkibbereen Theatre Society debuted in 1985 with their production of Bernard Farrell’s 'I Do Not Like Thee Dr. Fell' and have been bringing us top quality performances every year since.

Irish authors have been well represented along the way, with plays such as 'Sive' by John B Keane, 'Philadelphia Here I Come!' by Brian Friel, 'The Black Stranger' by Gerard Healy and ‘The Cripple of Inishmaan' by Martin McDonagh. The Company recent ly looked south to Spain for 'The House of Berrnarda Alba' by Federico Garcia Lorca.

July 2001 saw 'Remember Skibbereen', a pageant devised by Con Downing, based mainly on O'Donovan Rossa's recollections of what became known as the Great Famine.

Rossa’s frank eyewitness account of the horrors endured by the people of this area and beyond during the late 1840s was a tremendous success.

It was performed outdoors in front of the impressive and historic Skibbereen Heritage Centre at Upper Bridge Street in July, 2001, in conjunction with the golden jubilee Munster Fleadh Cheoil, and may be staged again on September 8 or 9 for National Heritage Week.
